Artwork for reproduction 1898 Wells Fargo & Co. Express sign.
Size 21 inches long, 21 inches high (excluding angle bracket). Original is enamel on steel, double sided
Reproduction is laminated vinyl on 0.08 inch aluminum. This "model 1898" sign is shown on the Centerville depot in photographs taken on July 4, 1911. The 1898 double face enamel office sign included the organization and incorporation dates. The 1888 version used the possessive form of the company name, "Co's." These were known as "call card" signs. The 1911 version of the double face enamel office sign, used the bookman font and deleted the organization and incorporation dates. The 1913 version of the sign used the bookman bold font and, like the 1911 version, omitted the organization and incorporation dates. Wells Fargo & Co. Express was merged into the newly formed American Railway Express in 1918. In 1929, American Railway Express became the Railway Express Agency.
